Buying a headphone amp: The Three Specs That Actually Matter

Spec sheets for amplifiers read like they were written to intimidate. Pages of figures, measurements at conditions you will never use, and a headline wattage number doing most of the marketing. The good news is that choosing a headphone amp comes down to three specifications that genuinely predict how it will behave with your headphones. Learn those three, and the rest of the sheet becomes background reading.

Those three are output impedance, gain, and output power — in that order of how often they are misunderstood. Get them right for the headphones you own, and almost any competently built headphone amp will satisfy you for years. Get them wrong, and even an expensive unit can hiss, clip, or barely whisper into the wrong load.

Impedance: Two Numbers That Must Agree

Impedance confuses buyers because two different specs share the word. Your headphone has an impedance, rated in ohms, which describes its load. The amplifier has an output impedance, which describes how it delivers power. The working rule is simple: the amp’s output impedance should be less than one eighth of your headphone’s impedance. Pair a 32-ohm headphone with an amp whose output impedance is 10 ohms and the amp starts reshaping the bass and treble — the headphone no longer sounds as designed.

This is why a headphone amp with a low output impedance (under 1 ohm is ideal, under 2 is fine) is the safe buy: it partners cleanly with everything from sensitive earbuds to 300-ohm studio models. High output impedance is the hidden flaw in many receivers and cheap interfaces, and it explains a lot of ‘these headphones sound weird on my setup’ complaints.

Gain: How Much Boost, and Why Switchable Wins

Gain is how much the amplifier multiplies the incoming signal, expressed in decibels. Too little gain and your demanding headphones never reach satisfying volume. Too much and the volume knob becomes a hair trigger, with the usable range squeezed into the first few degrees — while the noise floor rises to meet your ears.

The practical answer is switchable gain. A low setting suits efficient headphones and earbuds; a high setting serves hungry, high-impedance models. When you shop for a headphone amp, treat two or three gain settings as a real feature, not a gimmick. It is the difference between one amplifier that fits a whole collection and one that only suits a single pair.

Output Power: Read It at Your Impedance

Power ratings mislead because they shrink as impedance rises. An amp advertised at 1 watt may deliver that into 32 ohms but only a tenth as much into 300 ohms — and both numbers can be honest. So ignore the headline and find the power figure quoted at (or near) your headphone’s impedance. That is the number that predicts your headroom.

How much do you need? Most headphones reach painfully loud levels on a few hundred milliwatts. What you are really buying with extra power is not loudness but ease: clean peaks, controlled bass, and an amp that never sounds like it is working hard. Modest, honestly-rated power at your impedance beats a giant number quoted at a load you will never use.

Specs That Matter Less Than You Think

  • THD figures with five zeros after the decimal point. Below audibility is below audibility; your ears are not oscilloscopes.
  • Frequency response beyond 20 Hz–20 kHz. If it is flat across the audible band, that is the whole job.
  • Exotic component branding. Implementation matters more than the logo on a capacitor.

Reading a Spec Sheet in Ninety Seconds

Put the three specs to work like this. First, find your headphone’s impedance and sensitivity in its manual or on its box. Second, open the amplifier’s specification page and locate its power rating at the closest impedance to yours — if only a 32-ohm figure exists, assume much less at 300 ohms. Third, check the output impedance and the gain settings, and confirm the volume control is a proper analogue knob or stepped control rather than buttons with coarse jumps.

  • If a manufacturer hides the load and distortion behind its power figure, treat the number as advertising, not engineering.

Finally, sanity-check the pairing against your habits. If you listen quietly in the evening, low-volume channel balance and a fine-grained knob matter more than raw output. If you listen loud with inefficient headphones, headroom rules. A headphone amp is a ten-year purchase for most people; ninety seconds of arithmetic now is what makes it the right one.

Shop in this order — output impedance, gain options, honest power at your load — and the headphone amp you choose will simply disappear into the system, which is the highest compliment an amplifier can earn. The music gets the attention; the box just does its work.
